The Converse County School District #1 school board convened January 10th to appoint the recreation board and to nominate the same officers as the regular school board. The school board serves as the recreation board, and they heard and approved a request from the soccer club for $500 in funding to bring in a British coach to work with high school, middle school, and rec league athletes.
The school board enjoyed artwork around the board room provided by Douglas Intermediate School. Third graders displayed, among other things, fantasy forest and color strip trees, salt dough figurines, and pirate hats to go along with the building reading incentive for the year. Second graders shared artwork created in a TAB model where students devise their own ideas and use creative thinking and problem solving skills to create art in a variety of media.
Jessica Ewing, sixth grade team leader and science teacher, was honored by the board as the spotlight employee of the month. According to Ryan Mackey, Douglas Middle School principal, Jessica's enthusiasm and passion for teaching is second to none. Jessica teaches content and life skills to her students, and ensures that every one her students grows both academically and socially. Bringing positive energy to the school, being a team player, mentoring new teachers, and placing the needs and interests of her students before her own are attributes that make Jessica an asset to her school and the district.
Twenty one students graduated at the semester from Douglas High School. Erin Schnaible was at the board meeting to receive her diploma from DHS Principal Dan Edwards and Board Chairman Brad Reese. Congratulations to these early grads!
The board reviewed committee member assignments for the upcoming year. The board tabled the approval of the parental involvement policy in order to revise some language to meet new federal requirements. The other policies regarding non-custodial parents, community involvement in decision making, and public gifts and donations were approved. A policy regarding personnel records and files was read for the first time.
The board discussed the budget timeline, culminating in a budget hearing in July, and held a brief discussion of pending legislation. Superintendent Espeland noted that the legislative session will likely be dominated by discussion of possible impending cuts to education funding.
Dr. Espeland recommended, in light of the tight budget forecast, that the teacher retention incentive not be offered this year, but that the early resignation incentive be offered with a deadline of February 13, 2017. These recommendations were approved.
The 2017-18 district calendar, which was vetted by TABS, was approved by the board as were the personnel recommendations as presented.
