This is the image for the news article titled September 2017 Board meeting highlightsHighlighting last week's Converse County School District #1 regular monthly school board meeting was the announcement of Jean Schroeder, DHS/DPS nurse, as Wyoming School Nurse of the Year and Rebecca Moser of Douglas Primary School as Spotlight Employee of the Month. 

Jean Schroeder was selected by her peers in the Wyoming School Nurses Association as Wyoming School Nurse of the Year for the 2017-2018 school year. Mrs. Schroeder has served as the school nurse at Douglas High School for 19 years and according to her colleagues, "her expertise and compassion for mentoring are second to none; she is a lifelong learner who never steps back from a challenge." Mrs. Schroeder has served many leadership roles within the Wyoming School Nurses Association. She has worked collaboratively with nurses in her district and across the state. In addition to her school responsibilities, Mrs. Schroeder is very active in several community organizations. Congratulations to Nurse Jean!

Rebecca MoserRebecca Moser serves as a kindergarten resource teacher at the Primary School; however, Rebecca does much more than just support students throughout the day. She is also active with our high school cheerleaders and drill teams. In the classroom, Rebecca excels at creatively supporting students in all academic areas, as well as social skills and behavior management. She can teach reading and stop a meltdown all in a single breath! Her greatest gift is to see the possibility that lies in every student. Rebecca believes that all kids can succeed and deserve every possible chance to show their own special talent. She works very hard to find motivators for each student and always plays on their strengths. Students under her watchful eye make amazing progress both academically and socially. She is truly in this business to make a difference and is a change agent every single year. Thank you Rebecca for your hard work, time, and huge heart – you make a difference every day!

Some other good news is that the school district student enrollment is up this fall. On September 7, the district had 1712 students, up from 1706 a year ago and up 49 students from last May. All buildings are showing an increase in enrollment over spring numbers. 

Penny Hawk reports on summer school.The board also heard a report on the district's summer school program which had a high number of attendees who learned from a new curriculum based on hands-on activities aimed at shoring up reading and math skills. Director Penny Hawk reported that students saw good growth over the month-long program; but the district will continue to focus efforts on the most high-need students in future years.

In other business, the board, acting as the Converse County Recreation Board, approved the upgrading of the sprinkler systems for the Cal Ripkin baseball fields. 

During the regular meeting, the school board approved on final reading two policies about support staff salary schedules and regulations. Three policies about staff family and medical leave, special leave, and conferences and training were approved on second reading with a call for written comments by September 28, 2017. The board read for the first time policies on staff grievances and district procurement.

The district had a large list of used equipment, and the bids on that equipment were approved. The board also approved the isolation mileage recommendations for families who live in rural areas and transport their children either to school or to the bus. The board also approved a list of overnight trips to be taken by DMS and DHS students throughout the year. The board approved two agreements with the Northeast Wyoming BOCES for the early childhood FAST program and the alernative suspension BASE program, and appointed a district crisis team made up of administrators, teachers, and community partners. Maintenance Director Jim Cobb will lead that team. Finally, all personnel recommendations were approved as presented.
